Hyperion Cantos: The Most Terrifying Creature In Science Fiction

maxresdefault 2235

Warning! Some book spoilers! It has often been said that nature is cruel. All life on Earth is believed to have evolved from the same single-celled organism. Over the course of 3.5 Billion years those single cells, diversified, multiplied, became multiple celled organisms, developed organs, bones, and limbs. Life eventually filled every niche on the planet, each species learning to survive in its own way while constantly being tested by mother nature. But the cruelest fact about life has always been that in order to survive it must feed upon itself. Life consumes life. And there are many ways of doing it.

A butcherbird is a type of bird found mostly in African and Eurasian countries. It is a type of bird known as a Shrike. Once a Shrike captures its prey it impales the body upon sharp thorns or spikes. This allows the Shrike to bit by bit, tear the flesh from the creature it has captured, eating it in small chunks. These birds are also known to be territorial, they defended their claimed areas against rivals. The Idea of a Shrike has been used in fiction multiple times. But Dan Simmons’ Hyperion in my opinion makes the most interesting use of the attributes of the Shrike bird, within a fictional creature.

The First Aliens | A Brief History of Aliens in Science Fiction

maxresdefault 2282

Once, mankind looked up at the night sky, at the stars shining in the black abyss and they called them gods. Eventually, we realized that in actuality our own sun was just like each of those billions of stars out there in the darkness. It only took one leap of thought for someone to ask the question, If each of those stars is suns just like ours, do they have planets just like ours as well? And if they have planets, then could there be life, like us on other worlds?

In my last video, A Brief History of Space Travel in Science Fiction, we discussed Lucians, second-century work, True History, which depicts Lucian’s journey through outer space where he encounters alien lifeforms. We also mention Voltaire’s 1752 story, MicroMegas, which centers around a giant alien who goes on a journey throughout the universe. The fact that we have a work dating back to the year 300 AD depicting aliens shows that the idea that humans are not alone in the universe is just as ancient as the idea of traveling through space. Cosmic Pluralism is the specific term for what I’m describing here, it is the idea that there are many inhabited worlds beyond ours. Galileo didn’t develop the Heliocentric model of our solar system until the early 17th century, which means humans had been thinking about life in other worlds even before it became clear that the earth revolved around the sun.

The Most Horrifying Science Fiction Series of All | The Three-Body Problem Series

sddefault 254

Recently I had the pleasure of reading what is likely the most terrifying science fiction book series I’ve ever read. I’ve always enjoyed scary stories. As a kid, I read anthologies like goosebumps or scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. But I didn’t know true fear until I encountered the works of Stephen King, and H.P. Lovecraft in my teenage years. Lovecraft’s works opened up such terrifying vistas of thought that I would while reading them become transfixed and filled with ultimate existential dread. The cosmic terrors he wrote about in his stories struck me as somehow realer than the monsters and ghost of goosebumps and that is probably because in truth Lovecraft, being the flawed man he was, was expressing a very simple fear, fear of the unknown. And what is more unknown than the blackness of space. I must admit that not since my early teenage years have I felt such poignant terror while reading as I did when first encountering the work of Lovecraft. That Is until I read the Remembrance of Earth’s past trilogy.

There are three books in this series, The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Deaths End, there is also an additional book not written by Cixin Liu himself, called Redemption of Time. The first books in the series The Three-Body Problems start off as a mystery. As the story unfolds it starts to feel as though we are reading the unfolding of some grand conspiracy, a conspiracy written into the fabric of the universe itself. Early on in the story, you find out that scientists around the world have been killing themselves. A note left behind by one of the late scientists, Yang Dong ominously added to the mysteries, saying only:

All the evidence points to a single conclusion: Physics has never existed, and will never exist. I know what I’m doing is irresponsible. But I have no choice.

We base so much of our own perception of what we consider to be reality on what we can observe. We look upon the universe as it is and extrapolate from that point. But what if we will never be able to know the truth about the universe. What if the universal constants are not constant. What if the laws of physics are not laws, what if reality isn’t real. Before we get any further into the video I have to give a spoiler warning. If you have not read the series I highly recommend you stop this video and do so. If you’ve read the series, or just don’t care about spoilers then continue forth. Now we won’t be getting into all of the details of the series, I’ll be giving context to why exactly I think this series is so unnerving.
